I continue to predict tonight's awards. Starting with:
Update: 9 for 12! Not bad. Overall, Crystal did a great job, the show was fun, though there were no real surprises.
Best Animated Film:
A Cat in Paris
Chico and Rita
Puss in Boots
Kung Fu Panda 2
Rango
Will Win: Panda 2. Easily the best animated movie, if it does win, I'll be surprised.
Should Win: Panda 2. It's my 2nd favorite film of the year for a reason.
Best Original Score:
The Adventures of Tintin
War Horse
The Artist
Hugo
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Will Win: The Artist. The whole movie is one long score!
Should Win: War Horse. The score, by John Williams of course, is beautiful and deserves to win.
Best Director:
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life
Will Win: Payne. It's a risk to say he'll win seeing as he's going up against two legends with Scorsese and Allen, but I think he'll take home the statue.
Should Win: Allen. The best part of Paris, other than it's story, was it's direction, which was beautiful.
Best Actress:
Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis, The Help
Rooney Mara, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
Michele Williams, My Week With Marylin
Will Win: Streep. Streep will continue her reign of wins, though it will be close.
Should Win: Williams. I know this may be surprising, but Williams captured Marylin so well, she deserves a win.
Best Actor:
Demian Bichir, A Better Life
George Clooney, The Descendants
Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Brad Pitt, Moneyball
Gary Oldman, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Will Win: Clooney. He's been sweeping up other awards and will get this one.
Should Win: Oldman. While I was tempted to say Ryan Gosling, whose snubs are shocking, Oldman deserves to get an Oscar because... he's never gotten one before and he needs one. Badly.
Best Picture:
The Descendants
Moneyball
Hugo
The Artist
The Help
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Midnight in Paris
The Tree of Life
War Horse
Will Win: The Artist. It's between this and Descendants and look for this to take home the award.
Should Win: Midnight in Paris. Let me make one think perfectly clear. This is just because I have one seen this and Moneyball and I didn't think Moneyball was all that great. I think 50/50 should be one here among other and the choices given are pretty weak considering the other possible nominees.
Better luck next year.
